Performing computations on size_t variables that we feed to
xmalloc and friends can be dangerous, as an integer overflow
can cause us to allocate a much smaller chunk than we
realized.
We already have unsigned_add_overflows(), but let's add
unsigned_mult_overflows() to that. Furthermore, rather than
have each site manually check and die on overflow, we can
provide some helpers that will:
- promote the arguments to size_t, so that we know we are
doing our computation in the same size of integer that
will ultimately be fed to xmalloc
- check and die on overflow
- return the result so that computations can be done in
the parameter list of xmalloc.
These functions are a lot uglier to use than normal
arithmetic operators (you have to do "st_add(foo, bar)"
instead of "foo + bar"). To at least limit the damage, we
also provide multi-valued versions. So rather than:
st_add(st_add(a, b), st_add(c, d));
you can write:
st_add4(a, b, c, d);
This isn't nearly as elegant as a varargs function, but it's
a lot harder to get it wrong. You don't have to remember to
add a sentinel value at the end, and the compiler will
complain if you get the number of arguments wrong. This
patch adds only the numbered variants required to convert
the current code base; we can easily add more later if
needed.

Allocating a struct with a flex array is pretty simple in
practice: you over-allocate the struct, then copy some data
into the over-allocation. But it can be a slight pain to
make sure you're allocating and copying the right amounts.
This patch adds a few helpers to turn simple cases of
flex-array struct allocation into a one-liner that properly
checks for overflow. See the embedded documentation for
details.
Ideally we could provide a more flexible version that could
handle multiple strings, like:
FLEX_ALLOC_FMT(ref, name, "%s%s", prefix, name);
But we have to implement this as a macro (because of the
offset calculation of the flex member), which means we would
need all compilers to support variadic macros.

REALLOC_ARRAY inherently involves a multiplication which can
overflow size_t, resulting in a much smaller buffer than we
think we've allocated. We can easily harden it by using
st_mult() to check for overflow. Likewise, we can add
ALLOC_ARRAY to do the same thing for xmalloc calls.
xcalloc() should already be fine, because it takes the two
factors separately, assuming the system calloc actually
checks for overflow. However, before we even hit the system
calloc(), we do our memory_limit_check, which involves a
multiplication. Let's check for overflow ourselves so that
this limit cannot be bypassed.

The handle_builtin() starts from stripping of command extension if
STRIP_EXTENSION is enabled. Actually STRIP_EXTENSION does not used
anywhere else.
This patch introduces strip_extension() helper to strip STRIP_EXTENSION
extension from argv[0] with the strip_suffix() instead of manually
stripping.

Refactor skipping DOS drive prefixes
Some codepaths used fopen(3) when opening a fixed path in $GIT_DIR
(e.g. COMMIT_EDITMSG) that is meant to be left after the command is
done. This however did not work well if the repository is set to
be shared with core.sharedRepository and the umask of the previous
user is tighter. They have been made to work better by calling
unlink(2) and retrying after fopen(3) fails with EPERM.

When there is no `libgen.h` to our disposal, we miss the `dirname()`
function. Earlier we added basename() compatibility function for
the same reason at e1c06886 (compat: add a basename() compatibility
function, 2009-05-31).
So far, we only had one user of that function: credential-cache--daemon
(which was only compiled when Unix sockets are available, anyway). But
now we also have `builtin/am.c` as user, so we need it.
Since `dirname()` is a sibling of `basename()`, we simply put our very
own `gitdirname()` implementation next to `gitbasename()` and use it
if `NO_LIBGEN_H` has been set.

Junio noticed that there is an implicit assumption in pretty much
all the code calling has_dos_drive_prefix(): it forces all of its
callsites to hardcode the knowledge that the DOS drive prefix is
always two bytes long.
While this assumption is pretty safe, we can still make the code
more readable and less error-prone by introducing a function that
skips the DOS drive prefix safely.
While at it, we change the has_dos_drive_prefix() return value: it
now returns the number of bytes to be skipped if there is a DOS
drive prefix.

When getpwuid() on the system returned NULL (e.g. the user is not
in the /etc/passwd file or other uid-to-name mappings), the
codepath to find who the user is to record it in the reflog barfed
and died. Loosen the check in this codepath, which already accepts
questionable ident string (e.g. host part of the e-mail address is
obviously bogus), and in general when we operate fmt_ident() function
in non-strict mode.

This function is defined in wrapper.c, but nobody besides

strtoul_ui: reject negative values
When we are initializing a .git directory, we may call
probe_utf8_pathname_composition to detect utf8 mangling. We
pass in a path buffer for it to use, and it blindly
strcpy()s into it, not knowing whether the buffer is large
enough to hold the result or not.
In practice this isn't a big deal, because the buffer we
pass in already contains "$GIT_DIR/config", and we append
only a few extra bytes to it. But we can easily do the right
thing just by calling git_path_buf ourselves. Technically
this results in a different pathname (before we appended our
utf8 characters to the "config" path, and now they get their
own files in $GIT_DIR), but that should not matter for our
purposes.

There are a number of places in the code where we call
sprintf(), with the assumption that the output will fit into
the buffer. In many cases this is true (e.g., formatting a
number into a large buffer), but it is hard to tell
immediately from looking at the code. It would be nice if we
had some run-time check to make sure that our assumption is
correct (and to communicate to readers of the code that we
are not blindly calling sprintf, but have actually thought
about this case).
This patch introduces xsnprintf, which behaves just like
snprintf, except that it dies whenever the output is
truncated. This acts as a sort of assert() for these cases,
which can help find places where the assumption is violated
(as opposed to truncating and proceeding, which may just
silently give a wrong answer).

strtoul_ui uses strtoul to get a long unsigned, then checks that casting
to unsigned does not lose information and return the casted value.
On 64 bits architecture, checking that the cast does not change the value
catches most errors, but when sizeof(int) == sizeof(long) (e.g. i386),
the check does nothing. Unfortunately, strtoul silently accepts negative
values, and as a result strtoul_ui("-1", ...) raised no error.
This patch catches negative values before it's too late, i.e. before
calling strtoul.

The codepath to produce error messages had a hard-coded limit to
the size of the message, primarily to avoid memory allocation while
calling die().

The vreportf function always goes to stderr, but run-command
wants child errors to go to the parent's original stderr. To
solve this, commit a5487dd duplicates the stderr fd and
installs die and error handlers to direct the output
appropriately (which later turned into the vwritef
function). This has two downsides, though:
- we make multiple calls to write(), which contradicts the
"write at once" logic from d048a96 (print
warning/error/fatal messages in one shot, 2007-11-09).
- the custom handlers basically duplicate the normal
handlers. They're only a few lines of code, but we
should not have to repeat the magic "exit(128)", for
example.
We can solve the first by using fdopen() on the duplicated
descriptor. We can't pass this to vreportf, but we could
introduce a new vreportf_to to handle it.
However, to fix the second problem, we instead introduce a
new "set_error_handle" function, which lets the normal
vreportf calls output to a handle besides stderr. Thus we
can get rid of our custom handlers entirely, and just ask
the regular handlers to output to our new descriptor.
And as vwritef has no more callers, it can just go away.

The improved ARRAY_SIZE macro uses BARF_UNLESS_AN_ARRAY which expands
to a valid check for recent gcc versions and to 0 for older gcc
versions but is not defined on non-gcc builds.
Non-gcc builds need this macro to expand to 0 as well. The current outer
test (defined(__GNUC__) && (__GNUC__ >= 3)) is a strictly weaker
condition than the inner test (GIT_GNUC_PREREQ(3, 1)) so we can omit the
outer test and cause the BARF_UNLESS_AN_ARRAY macro to be defined
correctly on non-gcc builds as well as gcc builds with older versions.

The config-writing code uses xmmap to map the existing
config file, which will die if the map fails. This has two
downsides:
1. The error message is not very helpful, as it lacks any
context about the file we are mapping:
$ mkdir foo
$ git config --file=foo some.key value
fatal: Out of memory? mmap failed: No such device
2. We normally do not die in this code path; instead, we'd
rather report the error and return an appropriate exit
status (which is part of the public interface
documented in git-config.1).
This patch introduces a "gentle" form of xmmap which lets us
produce our own error message. We do not want to use mmap
directly, because we would like to use the other
compatibility elements of xmmap (e.g., handling 0-length
maps portably).
The end result is:
$ git.compile config --file=foo some.key value
error: unable to mmap 'foo': No such device
$ echo $?

To get number of elements in an array git use the ARRAY_SIZE macro
defined as:
#define ARRAY_SIZE(x) (sizeof(x)/sizeof((x)[0]))
The problem with it is a possibility of mistakenly passing to it a
pointer instead an array. The ARRAY_SIZE macro as conventionally
defined does not provide good type-safety and the open-coded
approach is more fragile, more verbose and provides no improvement in
type-safety.
Use instead a different but compatible ARRAY_SIZE() macro,
which will also break compile if you try to
use it on a pointer. This implemention revert to the original code
if the compiler doesn't know the typeof and __builtin_types_compatible_p
GCC extensions.
This can ensure our code is robust to changes, without
needing a gratuitous macro or constant. A similar
ARRAY_SIZE implementation also exists in the linux kernel.

POSIX.1-2001 specifies some functions for optimizing the
locking out of tight getc() loops. Not all systems are
POSIX, though, and even not all POSIX systems are required
to implement these functions. We can check for the
feature-test macro to see if they are available, and if not,
provide a noop implementation.
There's no Makefile knob here, because we should just detect
this automatically. If there are very bizarre systems, we
may need to add one, but it's not clear yet in which
direction:
1. If a system defines _POSIX_THREAD_SAFE_FUNCTIONS but
these functions are missing or broken, we would want a
knob to manually turn them off.
2. If a system has these functions but does not define
_POSIX_THREAD_SAFE_FUNCTIONS, we would want a knob to
manually turn them on.
We can add such a knob when we find a real-world system that
matches this.

If the user enables untracked cache, then
- move worktree to an unsupported filesystem
- or simply upgrade OS
- or move the whole (portable) disk from one machine to another
- or access a shared fs from another machine
there's no guarantee that untracked cache can still function properly.
Record the worktree location and OS footprint in the cache. If it
changes, err on the safe side and disable the cache. The user can
'update-index --untracked-cache' again to make sure all conditions are
met.
This adds a new requirement that setup_git_directory* must be called
before read_cache() because we need worktree location by then, or the
cache is dropped.
This change does not cover all bases, you can fool it if you try
hard. The point is to stop accidents.

On BSD-compatible systems some information such as the number
of available CPUs may only be available via the sysctl function.
Add support for a HAVE_BSD_SYSCTL option complete with autoconf
support and include the sys/syctl.h header when the option is
enabled to make the sysctl function available.

The borrowed code in kwset API did not follow our usual convention
to use "unsigned char" to store values that range from 0-255.

from the complier on Mac OSX unnecessarily set minimum required
version of the OS, which the user might want to raise (or lower)

Sun Studio on Solaris issues warnings about improper initialization
values being used when defining tolower_trans_tbl[] in ctype.c. The
array wants to store values with high-bit set and treat them as
values between 128 to 255. Unlike the rest of the Git codebase
where we explicitly specify 'unsigned char' for such variables and
arrays, however, kwset code we borrowed from elsewhere uses 'char'
for this and other variables.
Fix the declarations to explicitly use 'unsigned char' where
necessary to bring it in line with the rest of the Git.

cygwin, the code within a pre-processor conditional further down the
file became redundant. Remove the redundant code.
This effectively reverts commit 41b20017 ("Fix an "implicit function
definition" warning", 03-03-2007).

An earlier workaround to squelch unhelpful deprecation warnings
from the complier on Mac OSX unnecessarily set minimum required
version of the OS, which the user might want to raise (or lower)
for other reasons.

MAC_OS_X_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED may be defined by the builder to a
specific version in order to produce compatible binaries for a
particular system. Blindly defining it to MAC_OS_X_VERSION_10_6
is bad.
Additionally MAC_OS_X_VERSION_10_6 will not be defined on older
systems and should AvailabilityMacros.h be included on such as
system an error will result. However, using the explicit value
of 1060 (which is what MAC_OS_X_VERSION_10_6 is defined to) does
not solve the problem.
The changes that introduced stepping on MAC_OS_X_VERSION_MIN were
made in b195aa00 (git-compat-util: suppress unavoidable
Apple-specific deprecation warnings) to avoid deprecation
warnings.
Instead of blindly setting MAC_OS_X_VERSION_MIN to 1060 change
the definition of DEPRECATED_ATTRIBUTE to empty to avoid the
warnings. This preserves any MAC_OS_X_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED
setting while avoiding the warnings as intended by b195aa00.

It's a common idiom to duplicate a string if it is non-NULL,
or pass a literal NULL through. This is already a one-liner
in C, but you do have to repeat the name of the string
twice. So if there's a function call, you must write:
const char *x = some_fun(...);
return x ? xstrdup(x) : NULL;
instead of (with this patch) just:
return xstrdup_or_null(some_fun(...));

The gettext N_ macro is used to mark strings for translation
without actually translating them. At runtime the string is
expected to be passed to the gettext API for translation.
If two N_ macro invocations appear next to each other with only
whitespace (or nothing at all) between them, the two separate
strings will be marked for translation, but the preprocessor
will then silently combine the strings into one and at runtime
the string passed to gettext will not match the strings that
were translated so no translation will actually occur.
Avoid this by adding parentheses around the expansion of the
N_ macro so that instead of ending up with two adjacent strings
that are then combined by the preprocessor, two adjacent strings
surrounded by parentheses result instead which causes a compile
error so the mistake can be quickly found and corrected.
However, since these string literals are typically assigned to
static variables and not all compilers support parenthesized
string literal assignments, allow this to be controlled by the
Makefile with the default only enabled when the compiler is
known to support the syntax.
For now only __GNUC__ enables this by default which covers both
gcc and clang which should result in early detection of any
adjacent N_ macros.
Although the necessary tests make the affected files a bit less
elegant, the benefit of avoiding propagation of a translation-
marking error to all the translation teams thus creating extra
work for them when the error is eventually detected and fixed
would seem to outweigh the minor inelegance the additional
configuration tests introduce.

With the release of Mac OS X 10.7 in July 2011, Apple deprecated all
openssl.h functionality due to OpenSSL ABI (application binary
interface) instability, resulting in an explosion of compilation
warnings about deprecated SSL, SHA1, and X509 functions (among others).
61067954ce (cache.h: eliminate SHA-1 deprecation warnings on Mac OS X;
2013-05-19) and be4c828b76 (imap-send: eliminate HMAC deprecation
warnings on Mac OS X; 2013-05-19) attempted to ameliorate the situation
by taking advantage of drop-in replacement functionality provided by
Apple's (ABI-stable) CommonCrypto facility, however CommonCrypto
supplies only a subset of deprecated OpenSSL functionality, thus a host
of warnings remain.
Despite this shortcoming, it was hoped that Apple would ultimately
provide CommonCrypto replacements for all deprecated OpenSSL
functionality, and that the effort started by 61067954ce and be4c828b76
would be continued and eventually eliminate all deprecation warnings.
However, now 3.5 years later, and with Mac OS X at 10.10, the hoped-for
CommonCrypto replacements have not yet materialized, nor is there any
indication that they will be forthcoming.
These Apple-specific warnings are pure noise: they don't tell us
anything useful and we have no control over them, nor is Apple likely to
provide replacements any time soon. Such noise may obscure other
legitimate warnings, therefore silence them.

This adds simple wrapper functions around calls to stat(), fstat(),
and lstat() that translate the operating system's native file type
bits to those used by most operating systems. It also rewrites the
S_IF* macros to the common values, so all file type processing is
performed using the translated modes. This makes projects portable
across operating systems that use different file type definitions.
Only the file type bits may be affected by these compatibility
functions; the file permission bits are assumed to be 07777 and are
passed through unchanged.

A recent update to the gcc compiler (v4.8.3-5 x86_64) on 64-bit
cygwin leads to several new warnings about the implicit declaration
of the memmem(), strlcpy() and strcasestr() functions. For example:

macro on cygwin.

When the XL C compiler is run with an appropriate language level or
suboption, it defines a feature test macro to indicate support for
variadic macros by defining __C99_MACRO_WITH_VA_ARGS C preprocessor
macro.
This was tested on z/OS, but it should also work on AIX according
to IBM documentation.

clone.c, as this patch makes it redundant.
Fixes test 5537 (temporary shallow file vanished before unpack-objects
could open it)

Otherwise, callers must do so or risk triggering warnings
-Wchar-subscript (and rightfully so; a signed char might
cause us to use a bogus negative index into the
hexval_table).
While we are dropping the now-unnecessary casts from the
caller in urlmatch.c, we can get rid of similar casts in
actually parsing the hex by using the hexval() helper, which
implicitly casts to unsigned (but note that we cannot
implement isxdigit in terms of hexval(), as it also casts
its return value to unsigned).

behaviour slightly. If we failed to remove the object because the object
does not exist, we can still return success back to the caller since none of
the callers depend on "fail if the file did not exist".

The macro ALLOC_GROW manages several aspects of dynamic memory
allocations for arrays: It performs overprovisioning in order to avoid
reallocations in future calls, updates the allocation size variable,
multiplies the item size and thus allows users to simply specify the
item count, performs the reallocation and updates the array pointer.
Sometimes this is too much. Add the macro REALLOC_ARRAY, which only
takes care of the latter three points and allows users to specfiy the
number of items the array can store. It can increase and also decrease
the size. Using the macro avoid duplicating the variable name and
takes care of the item sizes automatically.

glibc has deprecated the use of _BSD_SOURCE define
warning "_BSD_SOURCE and _SVID_SOURCE are deprecated, use _DEFAULT_SOURCE"
To make it easier to maintain a cross platform source code, that
warning can be suppressed by _DEFAULT_SOURCE.
Define both _BSD_SOURCE and _DEFAULT_SOURCE to clean-up the build.

This hasn't been a problem in practice as almost all systems have the
setitimer() API (or it is provided by git in the case of mingw). This code
wasn't used in any default circumstances, as the build system never sets
NO_STRUCT_ITIMERVAL - this breakage only occured if the user asked for it.
We repair this case so we can rely on it in the following commits.

This is useful to see where trace output came from.
Add 'const char *file, int line' parameters to the printing functions and
rename them to *_fl.
Add trace_printf* and trace_strbuf macros resolving to the *_fl functions
and let the preprocessor fill in __FILE__ and __LINE__.
As the trace_printf* functions take a variable number of arguments, this
requires variadic macros (i.e. '#define foo(...) foo_impl(__VA_ARGS__)'.
Though part of C99, it is unclear whether older compilers support this.
Thus keep the old functions and only enable variadic macros for GNUC and
MSVC 2005+ (_MSC_VER 1400). This has the nice side effect that the old
C-style declarations serve as documentation how the macros are to be used.
Print 'file:line ' as prefix to each trace line. Align the remaining trace
output at column 40 to accommodate 18 char file names + 4 digit line
number (currently there are 30 *.c files of length 18 and just 11 of 19).
Trace output from longer source files (e.g. builtin/receive-pack.c) will
not be aligned.

Profile feedback sets -DNO_NORETURN, which causes the compat
header file to go into a default #else block. That #else
block defines away __attribute__(). Doing so causes all
kinds of problems with the Linux and gcc system headers:
in particular it makes the xmmintrin.h headers error out,
breaking the build.
Don't define away __attribute__ when __GNUC__ is set.

These two are almost the same function, with the exception
that has_extension only matches if there is content before
the suffix. So ends_with(".exe", ".exe") is true, but
has_extension would not be.
This distinction does not matter to any of the callers,
though, and we can just replace uses of has_extension with
ends_with. We prefer the "ends_with" name because it is more
generic, and there is nothing about the function that
requires it to be used for file extensions.

The ends_with function is essentially a simplified version
of strip_suffix, in which we throw away the stripped length.
Implementing it as an inline on top of strip_suffix has two
advantages:
1. We save a bit of duplicated code.
2. The suffix is typically a string literal, and we call
strlen on it. By making the function inline, many
compilers can replace the strlen call with a constant.

Many callers of ends_with want to not only find out whether
a string has a suffix, but want to also strip it off. Doing
that separately has two minor problems:
1. We often run over the string twice (once to find
the suffix, and then once more to find its length to
subtract the suffix length).
2. We have to specify the suffix length again, which means
either a magic number, or repeating ourselves with
strlen("suffix").
Just as we have skip_prefix to avoid these cases with
starts_with, we can add a strip_suffix to avoid them with
ends_with.
Note that we add two forms of strip_suffix here: one that
takes a string, with the resulting length as an
out-parameter; and one that takes a pointer/length pair, and
reuses the length as an out-parameter. The latter is more
efficient when the caller already has the length (e.g., when
using strbufs), but it can be easy to confuse the two, as
they take the same number and types of parameters.
For that reason, the "mem" form puts its length parameter
next to the buffer (since they are a pair), and the string
form puts it at the end (since it is an out-parameter). The
compiler can notice when you get the order wrong, which
should help prevent writing one when you meant the other.

"git status", even though it is a read-only operation, tries to
update the index with refreshed lstat(2) info to optimize future
accesses to the working tree opportunistically, but this could
race with a "read-write" operation that modify the index while it
is running. Detect such a race and avoid overwriting the index.

The skip_prefix() function returns a pointer to the content
past the prefix, or NULL if the prefix was not found. While
this is nice and simple, in practice it makes it hard to use
for two reasons:
1. When you want to conditionally skip or keep the string
as-is, you have to introduce a temporary variable.
For example:
tmp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo");
if (tmp)
buf = tmp;
2. It is verbose to check the outcome in a conditional, as
you need extra parentheses to silence compiler
warnings. For example:
if ((cp = skip_prefix(buf, "foo"))
/* do something with cp */
Both of these make it harder to use for long if-chains, and
we tend to use starts_with() instead. However, the first line
of "do something" is often to then skip forward in buf past
the prefix, either using a magic constant or with an extra
strlen(3) (which is generally computed at compile time, but
means we are repeating ourselves).
This patch refactors skip_prefix() to return a simple boolean,
and to provide the pointer value as an out-parameter. If the
prefix is not found, the out-parameter is untouched. This
lets you write:

Optimize check_refname_component using SSE2 on x86_64.
git rev-parse HEAD is a good test-case for this, since it does almost
nothing except parse refs. For one particular repo with about 60k
refs, almost all packed, the timings are:
Look up table: 29 ms
SSE2: 23 ms
This cuts about 20% off of the runtime.
Ondřej Bílka <neleai@seznam.cz> suggested an SSE2 approach to the
substring searches, which netted a speed boost over the SSE4.2 code I
had initially written.

Read-only operations such as "git status" that internally refreshes
the index write out the refreshed index to the disk to optimize
future accesses to the working tree, but this could race with a
"read-write" operation that modify the index while it is running.
Detect such a race and avoid overwriting the index.
Duy raised a good point that we may need to do the same for the
normal writeout codepath, not just the "opportunistic" update
codepath. While that is true, nobody sane would be running two
simultaneous operations that are clearly write-oriented competing
with each other against the same index file. So in that sense that
can be done as a less urgent follow-up for this topic.

Instead of running N pair-wise diff-trees when inspecting a
N-parent merge, find the set of paths that were touched by walking

Commit e208f9c converted error() into a macro to make its
constant return value more apparent to calling code. Commit
5ded807 prevents us using this macro with clang, since
clang's -Wunused-value is smart enough to realize that the
constant "-1" is useless in some contexts.
However, since the last commit puts the constant behind an
inline function call, this is enough to prevent the
-Wunused-value warning on both modern gcc and clang. So we
can now re-enable the macro when compiling with clang.
Tested with clang 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5.

Commit e208f9c introduced a macro to turn error() calls
into:
(error(), -1)
to make the constant return value more visible to the
calling code (and thus let the compiler make better
decisions about the code).
This works well for code like:
return error(...);
but the "-1" is superfluous in code that just calls error()
without caring about the return value. In older versions of
gcc, that was fine, but gcc 4.9 complains with -Wunused-value.
We can work around this by encapsulating the constant return
value in a static inline function, as gcc specifically
avoids complaining about unused function returns unless the
function has been specifically marked with the
warn_unused_result attribute.
We also use the same trick for config_error_nonbool and
opterror, which learned the same error technique in a469a10.

It is a common mistake to call read(2)/pread(2) and forget to
anticipate that they may return error with EAGAIN/EINTR when the
system call is interrupted.
We have xread() helper to relieve callers of read(2) from having to
worry about it; add xpread() helper to do the same for pread(2).
Update the caller in the builtin/index-pack.c and the mmap emulation
in compat/.

Most gmtime implementations return a NULL value when they
encounter an error (and this behavior is specified by ANSI C
and POSIX). FreeBSD's implementation, however, will simply
leave the "struct tm" untouched. Let's also recognize this
and convert it to a NULL (with this patch, t4212 should pass
on FreeBSD).

In the next patch we'll have to use alloca() for performance reasons,
but since alloca is non-standardized and is not portable, let's have a
trick with compatibility wrappers:
1. at configure time, determine, do we have working alloca() through
alloca.h, and define
#define HAVE_ALLOCA_H
if yes.
2. in code

This way, for systems, where alloca is available, we'll have optimal
on-stack allocations with fast executions. On the other hand, on
systems, where alloca is not available, this gracefully fallbacks to
xmalloc/free.
Both autoconf and config.mak.uname configurations were updated. For
autoconf, we are not bothering considering cases, when no alloca.h is
available, but alloca() works some other way - its simply alloca.h is
available and works or not, everything else is deep legacy.
For config.mak.uname, I've tried to make my almost-sure guess for where
alloca() is available, but since I only have access to Linux it is the
only change I can be sure about myself, with relevant to other changed
systems people Cc'ed.
NOTE
SunOS and Windows had explicit -DHAVE_ALLOCA_H in their configurations.
I've changed that to now-common HAVE_ALLOCA_H=YesPlease which should be
correct.

Update implementation of skip_prefix() to scan only once; given
that most "prefix" arguments to the inline function are constant
strings whose strlen() can be determined at the compile time, this
might actually make things worse with a compiler with sufficient
intelligence.

prefixcmp() and suffixcmp() share the common "cmp" suffix that
typically are used to name functions that can be used for ordering,
but they can't, because they are not antisymmetric:
prefixcmp("foo", "foobar") < 0
prefixcmp("foobar", "foo") == 0
We in fact do not use these functions for ordering. Replace them
with functions that just check for equality.
Add starts_with() and end_with() that will be used to replace
prefixcmp() and suffixcmp(), respectively, as the first step. These
are named after corresponding functions/methods in programming
languages, like Java, Python and Ruby.
In vcs-svn/fast_export.c, there was already an ends_with() function
that did the same thing. Let's use the new one instead while at it.

Send a large request to read(2)/write(2) as a smaller but still
reasonably large chunks, which would improve the latency when the
operation needs to be killed and incidentally works around broken
64-bit systems that cannot take a 2GB write or read in one go.

Cygwin port added a "not quite correct but a lot faster and good
enough for many lstat() calls that are only used to see if the
working tree entity matches the index entry" lstat() emulation some
time ago, and it started biting us in places. This removes it and
uses the standard lstat() that comes with Cygwin.
Recent topic that uses lstat on packed-refs file is broken when
this cheating lstat is used, and this is a simplest fix that is
also the cleanest direction to go in the long run.

Now that close_one_pack() has been introduced to handle file
descriptor pressure, it is not strictly necessary to close the
pack file descriptor in unuse_one_window() when we're under memory
pressure.
Jeff King provided a justification for leaving the pack file open:
If you close packfile descriptors, you can run into racy situations
where somebody else is repacking and deleting packs, and they go away
while you are trying to access them. If you keep a descriptor open,
you're fine; they last to the end of the process. If you don't, then
they disappear from under you.
For normal object access, this isn't that big a deal; we just rescan
the packs and retry. But if you are packing yourself (e.g., because
you are a pack-objects started by upload-pack for a clone or fetch),
it's much harder to recover (and we print some warnings).
Let's do so (or uh, not do so).

Use the function attributes extension to catch mistakes in use of
our own variadic functions that use NULL sentinel at the end
(i.e. like execl(3)) and format strings (i.e. like printf(3)).

The sentinel function attribute is not understood by versions of

define the LAST_ARG_MUST_BE_NULL macro to provide the sentinel attribute
for gcc v4.0 and newer.

Commit adbc0b6b ("cygwin: Use native Win32 API for stat", 30-09-2008)
added a Win32 specific implementation of the stat functions. In order
to handle absolute paths, cygwin mount points and symbolic links, this
implementation may fall back on the standard cygwin l/stat() functions.
Also, the choice of cygwin or Win32 functions is made lazily (by the
first call(s) to l/stat) based on the state of some config variables.
Unfortunately, this "schizophrenic stat" implementation has been the
source of many problems ever since. For example, see commits 7faee6b8,
79748439, 452993c2, 085479e7, b8a97333, 924aaf3e, 05bab3ea and 0117c2f0.
In order to avoid further problems, such as the issue raised by the new
reference handling API, remove the Win32 l/stat() implementation.

Update build for Cygwin 1.[57]. Torsten Bögershausen reports that
this is fine with Cygwin 1.7 ($gmane/225824) so let's try moving it
ahead.

the top level of the header.

When $HOME is misconfigured to point at an unreadable directory, we
used to complain and die. This loosens the check.

Due to a bug in the Darwin kernel, write(2) calls have a maximum size
of INT_MAX bytes.
Introduce a new compat function, clipped_write(), that only writes
at most INT_MAX bytes and returns the number of bytes written, as
a substitute for write(2), and allow platforms that need this to
enable it from the build mechanism with NEEDS_CLIPPED_WRITE.
Set it for Mac OS X by default. It may be necessary to include this
function on Windows, too.

Throughout git, it is assumed that the WIN32 preprocessor symbol is
defined on native Windows setups (mingw and msvc) and not on Cygwin.
On Cygwin, most of the time git can pretend this is just another Unix
machine, and Windows-specific magic is generally counterproductive.
Unfortunately Cygwin *does* define the WIN32 symbol in some headers.
Best to rely on a new git-specific symbol GIT_WINDOWS_NATIVE instead,
defined as follows:

After this change, it should be possible to drop the
CYGWIN_V15_WIN32API setting without any negative effect.

A regression fix for the logic to detect die() handler triggering
itself recursively.

When any git code calls die or die_errno, we use a counter
to detect recursion into the die functions from any of the
helper functions. However, such a simple counter is not good
enough for threaded programs, which may call die from a
sub-thread, killing only the sub-thread (but incrementing
the counter for everyone).
Rather than try to deal with threads ourselves here, let's
just allow callers to plug in their own recursion-detection
function. This is similar to how we handle the die routine
(the caller plugs in a die routine which may kill only the
sub-thread).

The changes v1.7.12.1~2^2~4 (config: warn on inaccessible files,
2012-08-21) and v1.8.1.1~22^2~2 (config: treat user and xdg config
permission problems as errors, 2012-10-13) were intended to prevent
important configuration (think "[transfer] fsckobjects") from being
ignored when the configuration is unintentionally unreadable (for
example with EIO on a flaky filesystem, or with ENOMEM due to a DoS
attack). Usually ~/.gitconfig and ~/.config/git are readable by the
current user, and if they aren't then it would be easy to fix those
permissions, so the damage from adding this check should have been
minimal.
Unfortunately the access() check often trips when git is being run as
a server. A daemon (such as inetd or git-daemon) starts as "root",
creates a listening socket, and then drops privileges, meaning that
when git commands are invoked they cannot access $HOME and die with
fatal: unable to access '/root/.config/git/config': Permission denied
Any patch to fix this would have one of three problems:
1. We annoy sysadmins who need to take an extra step to handle HOME
when dropping privileges (the current behavior, or any other
proposal that they have to opt into).
2. We annoy sysadmins who want to set HOME when dropping privileges,
either by making what they want to do impossible, or making them
set an extra variable or option to accomplish what used to work
(e.g., a patch to git-daemon to set HOME when --user is passed).
3. We loosen the check, so some cases which might be noteworthy are
not caught.
This patch is of type (3).
Treat user and xdg configuration that are inaccessible due to
permissions (EACCES) as though no user configuration was provided at
all.
An alternative method would be to check if $HOME is readable, but that
would not help in cases where the user who dropped privileges had a
globally readable HOME with only .config or .gitconfig being private.
This does not change the behavior when /etc/gitconfig or .git/config
is unreadable (since those are more serious configuration errors),
nor when ~/.gitconfig or ~/.config/git is unreadable due to problems
other than permissions.

When core.sharedRepository is used, set_shared_perm() in path.c
needs lstat() to return the correct POSIX permissions.
The default for cygwin is core.ignoreCygwinFSTricks = false, which
means that the fast implementation in do_stat() is used instead of
lstat().
lstat() under cygwin uses the Windows security model to implement
POSIX-like permissions. The user, group or everyone bits can be set
individually.
do_stat() simplifes the file permission bits, and may return a wrong
value. The read-only attribute of a file is used to calculate the
permissions, resulting in either rw-r--r-- or r--r--r--
One effect of the simplified do_stat() is that t1301 fails.
Add a function cygwin_get_st_mode_bits() which returns the POSIX
permissions. When not compiling for cygwin, true_mode_bits() in
path.c is used.
Side note:
t1301 passes under cygwin 1.5.
The "user write" bit is synchronized with the "read only" attribute
of a file:
$ chmod 444 x

Commit 0f77dea9 ("mingw: move poll out of sys-folder", 24-10-2011), along
with other commits in the 'ef/mingw-upload-archive' branch (see commit
7406aa20), effectively reintroduced the same problem addressed by commit
56fb3ddc ("msvc: Fix compilation errors in compat/win32/sys/poll.c",
04-12-2010).
In order to fix the compilation errors, we use the same solution adopted
in that earlier commit. In particular, we set _WIN32_WINNT to 0x0502
(which would target Windows Server 2003) prior to including the winsock2.h
header file.
Also, we delete the compat/vcbuild/include/sys/poll.h header file, since
it is now redundant and it's presence may cause some confusion.

QNX 6.3.2 uses GCC 2.95.3 by default, and GCC 2.95.3 doesn't remove the
comma if the error macro's variable argument is left out.
Instead of testing for a sufficiently recent version of GCC, make
__VA_ARGS__ match all of the arguments.

Replace our use of fnmatch(3) with a more feature-rich wildmatch.
A handful patches at the bottom have been moved to nd/wildmatch to
graduate as part of that branch, before this series solidifies.
We may want to mark USE_WILDMATCH as an experimental curiosity a
bit more clearly (i.e. should not be enabled in production
environment, because it will make the behaviour between builds
unpredictable).

wildmatch: rename constants and update prototype
Commit a469a10 wraps some error calls in macros to give the
compiler a chance to do more static analysis on their
constant -1 return value. We limit the use of these macros
to __GNUC__, since gcc is the primary beneficiary of the new
information, and because we use GNU features for handling
variadic macros.
However, clang also defines __GNUC__, but generates warnings
with -Wunused-value when these macros are used in a void
context, because the constant "-1" ends up being useless.
Gcc does not complain about this case (though it is unclear
if it is because it is smart enough to see what we are
doing, or too dumb to realize that the -1 is unused). We
can squelch the warning by just disabling these macros when
clang is in use.

When attempting to read the XDG-style $HOME/.config/git/config and
finding that $HOME/.config/git is a file, we gave a wrong error
message, instead of treating the case as "a custom config file does
not exist there" and moving on.

Deal with a situation where .config/git is a file and we notice

Help compilers' flow analysis by making it more explicit that

This is similar to NO_FNMATCH but it uses wildmatch instead of
compat/fnmatch. This is an intermediate step to let wildmatch be used

fnmatch in test-wildmatch is not impacted by this and is the only
place that NO_FNMATCH or NO_FNMATCH_CASEFOLD remain active when
USE_WILDMATCH is set.

Earlier we allowed platforms that lack <sys/param.h> not to include
the header file from git-compat-util.h; we have included this header
file since the early days back when we used MAXPATHLEN (which we no
longer use) and also depended on it slurping ULONG_MAX (which we get
by including stdint.h or inttypes.h these days).
It turns out that we can compile our modern codebase just file
without including it on many platforms (so far, Fedora, Debian,
Ubuntu, MinGW, Mac OS X, Cygwin, HP-Nonstop, QNX and z/OS are
reported to be OK).
Let's stop including it by default, and on platforms that need it to
be included, leave "make NEEDS_SYS_PARAM_H=YesPlease" as an escape
hatch and ask them to report to us, so that we can find out about
the real dependency and fix it in a more platform agnostic way.

When git is compiled with "gcc -Wuninitialized -O3", some
inlined calls provide an additional opportunity for the
compiler to do static analysis on variable initialization.
For example, with two functions like this:
int get_foo(int *foo)

*foo = 0;

if (get_foo(&foo) < 0)
return -1;
printf("foo is %d\n", foo);
}
If get_foo() is not inlined, then when compiling some_fun,
gcc sees only that a pointer to the local variable is
passed, and must assume that it is an out parameter that
is initialized after get_foo returns.
However, when get_foo() is inlined, the compiler may look at
all of the code together and see that some code paths in
get_foo() do not initialize the variable. As a result, it
prints a warning. But what the compiler can't see is that
error() always returns -1, and therefore we know that either
we return early from some_fun, or foo ends up initialized,
and the code is safe. The warning is a false positive.
If we can make the compiler aware that error() will always
return -1, it can do a better job of analysis. The simplest
method would be to inline the error() function. However,
this doesn't work, because gcc will not inline a variadc
function. We can work around this by defining a macro. This
relies on two gcc extensions:
1. Variadic macros (these are present in C99, but we do
not rely on that).
2. Gcc treats the "##" paste operator specially between a
comma and __VA_ARGS__, which lets our variadic macro
work even if no format parameters are passed to
error().
Since we are using these extra features, we hide the macro
behind an #ifdef. This is OK, though, because our goal was
just to help gcc.

The header strings.h was formerly only included for HP NonStop (aka
Tandem) to define strcasecmp, but another platform requiring this
inclusion has been found. The build system will now include the
file based on its presence determined by configure.

RFC 2047 requires more characters to be encoded than it is currently done.
Especially, RFC 2047 distinguishes between allowed remaining characters
in encoded words in addresses (From, To, etc.) and other headers, such
as Subject.
Make add_rfc2047() and is_rfc2047_special() location dependent and include
all non-allowed characters to hopefully be RFC 2047 conformant.
This especially fixes a problem, where RFC 822 specials (e. g. ".") were
left unencoded in addresses, which was solved with a non-standard-conforming
workaround in the past (which is going to be removed in a follow-up patch).

Git reads multiple configuration files: settings come first from the
system config file (typically /etc/gitconfig), then the xdg config
file (typically ~/.config/git/config), then the user's dotfile
(~/.gitconfig), then the repository configuration (.git/config).
Git has always used access(2) to decide whether to use each file; as
an unfortunate side effect, that means that if one of these files is
unreadable (e.g., EPERM or EIO), git skips it. So if I use
~/.gitconfig to override some settings but make a mistake and give it
the wrong permissions then I am subject to the settings the sysadmin
chose for /etc/gitconfig.
Better to error out and ask the user to correct the problem.
This only affects the user and xdg config files, since the user
presumably has enough access to fix their permissions. If the system
config file is unreadable, the best we can do is to warn about it so
the user knows to notify someone and get on with work in the meantime.

The access_or_warn() function is used to check for optional
configuration files like .gitconfig and .gitignore and warn when they
are not accessible due to a configuration issue (e.g., bad
permissions). It is not supposed to complain when a file is simply
missing.
Noticed on a system where ~/.config/git was a file --- when the new
XDG_CONFIG_HOME support looks for ~/.config/git/config it should
ignore ~/.config/git instead of printing irritating warnings:
$ git status -s
warning: unable to access '/home/jrn/.config/git/config': Not a directory
warning: unable to access '/home/jrn/.config/git/config': Not a directory

The current code uses setitimer() only for reducing perceived
latency. On platforms that lack setitimer() (e.g. HP NonStop),
allow builders to say "make NO_SETITIMER=YesPlease" to use a no-op
substitute, as doing so would not affect correctness.
HP NonStop does provide struct itimerval, but other platforms may
not, so this is taken care of in this commit too, by setting
NO_STRUCT_ITIMERVAL.

them because they do not exist, but we did not diagnose existing
files that we cannot read.

The previous series introduced warnings to multiple places, but it
could become tiring to see the warning on the same path over and
over again during a single run of Git. Making just one function
responsible for issuing this warning, we could later choose to keep
track of which paths we issued a warning (it would involve a hash
table of paths after running them through real_path() or something)
in order to reduce noise.
Right now we do not know if the noise reduction is necessary, but it
still would be a good code reduction/sharing anyway.

Before reading a config file, we check "!access(path, R_OK)"
to make sure that the file exists and is readable. If it's
not, then we silently ignore it.
For the case of ENOENT, this is fine, as the presence of the
file is optional. For other cases, though, it may indicate a
configuration error (e.g., not having permissions to read
the file). Let's print a warning in these cases to let the
user know.

Mac OS X mangles file names containing unicode on file systems HFS+,
VFAT or SAMBA. When a file using unicode code points outside ASCII
is created on a HFS+ drive, the file name is converted into
decomposed unicode and written to disk. No conversion is done if
the file name is already decomposed unicode.
Calling open("\xc3\x84", ...) with a precomposed "Ä" yields the same
result as open("\x41\xcc\x88",...) with a decomposed "Ä".
As a consequence, readdir() returns the file names in decomposed
unicode, even if the user expects precomposed unicode. Unlike on
HFS+, Mac OS X stores files on a VFAT drive (e.g. an USB drive) in
precomposed unicode, but readdir() still returns file names in
decomposed unicode. When a git repository is stored on a network
share using SAMBA, file names are send over the wire and written to
disk on the remote system in precomposed unicode, but Mac OS X
readdir() returns decomposed unicode to be compatible with its
behaviour on HFS+ and VFAT.
The unicode decomposition causes many problems:
- The names "git add" and other commands get from the end user may
often be precomposed form (the decomposed form is not easily input
from the keyboard), but when the commands read from the filesystem
to see what it is going to update the index with already is on the
filesystem, readdir() will give decomposed form, which is different.
- Similarly "git log", "git mv" and all other commands that need to
compare pathnames found on the command line (often but not always
precomposed form; a command line input resulting from globbing may
be in decomposed) with pathnames found in the tree objects (should
be precomposed form to be compatible with other systems and for
consistency in general).
- The same for names stored in the index, which should be
precomposed, that may need to be compared with the names read from
readdir().
NFS mounted from Linux is fully transparent and does not suffer from
the above.
As Mac OS X treats precomposed and decomposed file names as equal,
we can
- wrap readdir() on Mac OS X to return the precomposed form, and
- normalize decomposed form given from the command line also to the
precomposed form,
to ensure that all pathnames used in Git are always in the
precomposed form. This behaviour can be requested by setting
"core.precomposedunicode" configuration variable to true.
The code in compat/precomposed_utf8.c implements basically 4 new
functions: precomposed_utf8_opendir(), precomposed_utf8_readdir(),
precomposed_utf8_closedir() and precompose_argv(). The first three
are to wrap opendir(3), readdir(3), and closedir(3) functions.
The argv[] conversion allows to use the TAB filename completion done
by the shell on command line. It tolerates other tools which use
readdir() to feed decomposed file names into git.
When creating a new git repository with "git init" or "git clone",
"core.precomposedunicode" will be set "false".
The user needs to activate this feature manually. She typically
sets core.precomposedunicode to "true" on HFS and VFAT, or file
systems mounted via SAMBA.

When getpwuid fails, we give a cute but cryptic message.
While it makes sense if you know that getpwuid or identity
functions are being called, this code is triggered behind
the scenes by quite a few git commands these days (e.g.,
receive-pack on a remote server might use it for a reflog;
the current message is hard to distinguish from an
authentication error). Let's switch to something that gives
a little more context.
While we're at it, we can factor out all of the
cut-and-pastes of the "you don't exist" message into a
wrapper function. Rather than provide xgetpwuid, let's make
it even more specific to just getting the passwd entry for
the current uid. That's the only way we use getpwuid anyway,
and it lets us make an even more specific error message.
The current message also fails to mention errno. While the
usual cause for getpwuid failing is that the user does not
exist, mentioning errno makes it easier to diagnose these
problems. Note that POSIX specifies that errno remain
untouched if the passwd entry does not exist (but will be
set on actual errors), whereas some systems will return
ENOENT or similar for a missing entry. We handle both cases
in our wrapper.

in turn. Here, however, we choose to move the extern declaration for
'tolower_trans_tbl' into "git-compat-util.h", alongside the other
extern declaration from ctype.c for 'sane_ctype'.

If you access repositories over smart-http using http
authentication, then it can be annoying to have git ask you
for your password repeatedly. We cache credentials in
memory, of course, but git is composed of many small
programs. Having to input your password for each one can be
frustrating.
This patch introduces a credential helper that will cache
passwords in memory for a short period of time.

Do not include header files when compiling with MSVC that do not
exist and which are also not included when compiling with MINGW.
A direct consequence is that git can be compiled again with MSVC
because the missing "sys/resources.h" is no longer included.

real_path currently assumes it's input had '/' as path seperator.
This assumption does not hold true for the code-path from
prefix_path (on Windows), where real_path can be called before
normalize_path_copy.
Fix real_path so it doesn't make this assumption. Create a helper
function to reverse-search for the last path-seperator in a string.

The earlier design was to take whatever non-alnum that the short format
parser happens to support, leaving the rest as part of the pattern, so a
version of git that knows '*' magic and a version that does not would have
behaved differently when given ":*Makefile". The former would have
applied the '*' magic to the pattern "Makefile", while the latter would
used no magic to the pattern "*Makefile".
Instead, just reserve all non-alnum ASCII letters that are neither glob
nor regexp special as potential magic signature, and when we see a magic
that is not supported, die with an error message, just like the longhand
codepath does.
With this, ":%#!*Makefile" will always mean "%#!" magic applied to the
pattern "*Makefile", no matter what version of git is used (it is a
different matter if the version of git supports all of these three magic
matching rules).
Also make ':' without anything else to mean "there is no pathspec". This
would allow differences between "git log" and "git log ." run from the top
level of the working tree (the latter simplifies no-op commits away from
the history) to be expressed from a subdirectory by saying "git log :".

Starting with commit c793430 (Limit file descriptors used by packs,
2011-02-28), git uses getrlimit to tell how many file descriptors it
can use. Unfortunately it does not include the header declaring that
function, resulting in compilation errors:

The standard header to include for this is <sys/resource.h> (which on

current glibc sys/resource.h happens to be included by sys/wait.h.
MinGW does not provide sys/resource.h (and compat/mingw takes care of
providing getrlimit some other way), so add the missing #include to
the "#ifndef __MINGW32__" block in git-compat-util.h.

Since an obvious implementation of va_list is to make it a pointer
into the stack frame, implementing va_copy as "dst = src" will work on
many systems. Platforms that use something different (e.g., a size-1
array of structs, to be assigned with *(dst) = *(src)) will need some
other compatibility macro, though.
Luckily, as the glibc manual hints, such systems tend to provide the
__va_copy macro (introduced in GCC in March, 1997). By using that if
it is available, we can cover our bases pretty well.
Discovered by building with CC="gcc -std=c89" on an amd64 machine:

HP C for Integrity servers (Itanium) gained support for noreturn
attribute sometime in 2006. It was released in Compiler Version
A.06.10 and made available in July 2006.
The __HP_cc define detects the HP C compiler version. Precede the
__GNUC__ check so it works well when compiling with HP C using -Agcc
option that enables partial support for the GNU C dialect. The -Agcc
defines the __GNUC__ too.

va_copy is C99. We have avoided using va_copy many times in the past,
which has led to a bunch of cut-and-paste. From everything I found
searching the web, implementations have historically either provided
va_copy or just let your code assume that simple assignment of worked.
So my guess is that this will be sufficient, though we won't really
know for sure until somebody reports a problem.

The idiom (a + b < a) works fine for detecting that an unsigned
integer has overflowed, but a more explicit
unsigned_add_overflows(a, b)
might be easier to read.
Define such a macro, expanding roughly to ((a) < UINT_MAX - (b)).
Because the expansion uses each argument only once outside of sizeof()
expressions, it is safe to use with arguments that have side effects.

The odb_mkstemp and odb_pack_keep functions open files under the
$GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY directory. This requires access to the git
configuration which very simple programs do not need.
Move these functions to environment.o, closer to their dependencies.
This should make it easier for programs to link to wrapper.o without
linking to environment.o.

Windows doesn't have inet_pton and inet_ntop, so
add prototypes in git-compat-util.h for them.
At the same time include git-compat-util.h in
the sources for these functions, so they use the
network-wrappers from there on Windows.

Syslog does not usually exist on Windows, so implement our own using
Window's ReportEvent mechanism.
Strings containing "%1" gets expanded into them selves by ReportEvent,
resulting in an unreadable string. "%2" and above is not a problem.
Unfortunately, on Windows an IPv6 address can contain "%1", so expand
"%1" to "% 1" before reporting. "%%1" is also a problem for ReportEvent,
but that string cannot occur in an IPv6 address.

Signed integer overflow is not defined in C, so do not depend on it.
This fixes a problem with GCC 4.4.0 and -O3 where the optimizer would
consider "consumed_bytes > consumed_bytes + bytes" as a constant
expression, and never execute the die()-call.

Attempting to mmap (via git-add or similar) a file larger than 4GB on
32-bit Linux systems results in a repository that has only the file
modulo 4GB stored, because of truncation of the off_t file size to a
size_t for mmap.
When xsize_t was introduced to handle this truncation in dc49cd7 (Cast
64 bit off_t to 32 bit size_t, 2007-03-06), Shawn even pointed out
that it should detect when such a cutoff happens.
Make it so.

The default executable path list used by exec_cmd.c is hard-coded to
be "/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin". Use an appropriate value for the
system from <paths.h> when available.
Add HAVE_PATHS_H make variables and enable it on Linux, FreeBSD,
NetBSD, OpenBSD and GNU where it is known to exist for now. Somebody
else may want to do an autoconf support later.

As on FreeBSD, defining _XOPEN_SOURCE to 600 on DragonFly BSD 2.4-RELEASE
or later hides symbols from programs, which leads to implicit declaration
of functions, making the return value to be assumed an int. On architectures
where sizeof(int) < sizeof(void *), this can cause unexpected behaviors or
crashes.
This change won't affect other OSes unless they define __DragonFly__ macro,
or older versions of DragonFly BSD as the current git code doesn't rely on
the features only available with _XOPEN_SOURCE set to 600 on DragonFly.

This patch introduces the remove_or_warn function which is a
generalised version of the {unlink,rmdir}_or_warn functions. It takes
an additional parameter indicating the mode of the file to be removed.
The patch also modifies certain functions to use remove_or_warn
where appropriate, and adds a test case for a bug fixed by the use
of remove_or_warn.

By providing a hook for the routine responsible for trying to free some
memory on malloc failure, we can ensure that the called routine is
protected by the appropriate locks when threads are in play.
The obvious offender here was pack-objects which was calling xmalloc()
within threads while release_pack_memory() is not thread safe.
