It's not good to use the phrase 'do not touch' to convey the
information that the cut-line should not be modified or removed as
it could possibly be mis-interpreted by a person who doesn't know
that the word 'touch' has the meaning of 'tamper with'. Further, it
could make translations a little difficult as it might not have the
intended meaning in a few languages when translated as such.
So, use more intuitive terms in the sentence.

Store the pointer to the string allocated by shorten_unambiguous_ref in
a dedicated variable, short_base, and keep base unchanged. A non-const
variable is more appropriate for such an object. It avoids having to
cast const away on free and stops redefining the meaning of base, making
the code slightly clearer.

"git status" has long shown essentially the same message as "git
commit"; the message it gives while preparing for the root commit,
i.e. "Initial commit", was hard to understand for some new users.
Now it says "No commits yet" to stress more on the current status
(rather than the commit the user is preparing for, which is more in
line with the focus of "git commit").

The existing message, "Initial commit", makes sense for the commit template
notifying users that it's their initial commit, but is confusing when
merely checking the status of a fresh repository (or orphan branch)
without having any commits yet.
Change the output of "status" to say "No commits yet" when "git
status" is run on a fresh repo (or orphan branch), while retaining the
current "Initial commit" message displayed in the template that's
displayed in the editor when the initial commit is being authored.
Correspondingly change the output of "short status" to "No commits yet
on " when "git status -sb" is run on a fresh repo (or orphan branch).
A few alternatives considered were,
* Waiting for initial commit
* Your current branch does not have any commits
* Current branch waiting for initial commit
The most succint one among the alternatives was chosen.

When fopen() returns NULL, it could be because the given path does not
exist, but it could also be some other errors and the caller has to

will have a cut line and diff after the log message, like so:

"git interpret-trailers" is unaware of the cut line, and assumes the
trailer block would be at the end of the whole thing. This can easily
be seen with:
$ GIT_EDITOR='git interpret-trailers --in-place --trailer Acked-by:me' \
git commit --amend -v
Teach "git interpret-trailers" to notice the cut-line and ignore the
remainder of the input when looking for a place to add new trailer
block. This makes it consistent with how "git commit -v -s" inserts a
new Signed-off-by: line.
This can be done by the same logic as the existing helper function,
wt_status_truncate_message_at_cut_line(), uses, but it wants the caller
to pass a strbuf to it. Because the function ignore_non_trailer() used
by the command takes a <pointer, length> pair, not a strbuf, steal the
logic from wt_status_truncate_message_at_cut_line() to create a new
wt_status_locate_end() helper function that takes <pointer, length>
pair, and make ignore_non_trailer() call it to help "interpret-trailers".
Since there is only one caller of wt_status_truncate_message_at_cut_line()
in cmd_commit(), rewrite it to call wt_status_locate_end() helper instead
and remove the old helper that no longer has any caller.

Some platforms have ulong that is smaller than time_t, and our
historical use of ulong for timestamp would mean they cannot
represent some timestamp that the platform allows. Invent a
separate and dedicated timestamp_t (so that we can distingiuish
timestamps and a vanilla ulongs, which along is already a good
move), and then declare uintmax_t is the type to be used as the
timestamp_t.

Convert lookup_commit, lookup_commit_or_die,
lookup_commit_reference, and lookup_commit_reference_gently to take
struct object_id arguments.
Introduce a temporary in parse_object buffer in order to convert this
function. This is required since in order to convert parse_object and
parse_object_buffer, lookup_commit_reference_gently and
lookup_commit_or_die would need to be converted. Not introducing a
temporary would therefore require that lookup_commit_or_die take a
struct object_id *, but lookup_commit would take unsigned char *,
leaving a confusing and hard-to-use interface.
parse_object_buffer will lose this temporary in a later patch.

This function did a whole lot of unnecessary work, such as reading in
four files just to figure out that, oh, hey, we do not need to look at
them after all because the HEAD is not detached.
Simplify the entire function to return early when possible, to read in
the files only when necessary, and to release the allocated memory
always (there was a leak, reported via Coverity, where we failed to
release the allocated strings if the HEAD is not detached).

When git-status shows tracking data for the current branch
in the long format, we try to end the stanza with a blank
line. When status.displayCommentPrefix is true, we call
color_fprintf_ln() to do so. But when it's false, we call
the enigmatic:
fputs("", s->fp);
which does nothing at all! This is a bug from 7d7d68022
(silence a bunch of format-zero-length warnings,
2014-05-04). Prior to that, we called fprintf_ln() with an
empty string. Switching to fputs() meant we needed to
include the "newline in the string, but we didn't.
So you see:

The fix itself is a one-liner. But we never noticed this

all. So let's configure an upstream during the initial
setup, which means that the code will be exercised as part
of all of the various invocations in that script. This makes
the diff rather noisy, but should give us good coverage.

Git's source code assumes that unsigned long is at least as precise as
time_t. Which is incorrect, and causes a lot of problems, in particular
where unsigned long is only 32-bit (notably on Windows, even in 64-bit
versions).
So let's just use a more appropriate data type instead. In preparation
for this, we introduce the new `timestamp_t` data type.
By necessity, this is a very, very large patch, as it has to replace all
timestamps' data type in one go.
As we will use a data type that is not necessarily identical to `time_t`,
we need to be very careful to use `time_t` whenever we interact with the
system functions, and `timestamp_t` everywhere else.

If I add an untracked file to a submodule or modify a tracked file,
currently "git status --short" treats the change in the same way as
changes to the current HEAD of the submodule:
$ git clone --quiet --recurse-submodules https://gerrit.googlesource.com/gerrit
$ echo hello >gerrit/plugins/replication/stray-file
$ sed -i -e 's/.*//' gerrit/plugins/replication/.mailmap
$ git -C gerrit status --short
M plugins/replication
This is by analogy with ordinary files, where "M" represents a change
that has not been added yet to the index. But this change cannot be
added to the index without entering the submodule, "git add"-ing it,
and running "git commit", so the analogy is counterproductive.
Introduce new status letters " ?" and " m" for this. These are similar
to the existing "??" and " M" but mean that the submodule (not the
parent project) has new untracked files and modified files, respectively.
The user can use "git add" and "git commit" from within the submodule to
add them.
Changes to the submodule's HEAD commit can be recorded in the index with
a plain "git add -u" and are shown with " M", like today.
To avoid excessive clutter, show at most one of " ?", " m", and " M" for
the submodule. They represent increasing levels of change --- the last
one that applies is shown (e.g., " m" if there are both modified files
and untracked files in the submodule, or " M" if the submodule's HEAD
has been modified and it has untracked files).
While making these changes, we need to make sure to not break porcelain
level 1, which shares code with "status --short". We only change
"git status --short".
Non-short "git status" and "git status --porcelain=2" already handle
these cases by showing more detail:

git status provides a porcelain mode for porcelain writers with a
supposedly stable (plumbing) interface.
7a76c28ff2 ("status: disable translation when --porcelain is used", 2014-03-20)
made sure that ahead/behind info is not translated (i.e. is stable).
Make sure that the remaining two strings (initial commit, detached head)
are stable, too.
These changes are for the v1 porcelain interface. While we do have a perfectly
stable v2 porcelain interface now, some tools (such as
powerline-gitstatus) are written against v1 and profit from fixing v1
without any changes on their side.

The require_clean_work_tree() function calls hold_locked_index()
with die_on_error=0 to signal that it is OK if it fails to obtain
the lock, but unconditionally calls update_index_if_able(), which
will try to write into fd=-1.

When new paths were added by "git add -N" to the index, it was
enough to circumvent the check by "git commit" to refrain from
making an empty commit without "--allow-empty". The same logic
prevented "git status" to show such a path as "new file" in the
"Changes not staged for commit" section.

When comparing the index and the working tree to show which paths are
new, and comparing the tree recorded in the HEAD and the index to see if
committing the contents recorded in the index would result in an empty
commit, we would want the former comparison to say "these are new paths"
and the latter to say "there is no change" for paths that are marked as
intent-to-add.
We made a similar attempt at d95d728a ("diff-lib.c: adjust position of
i-t-a entries in diff", 2015-03-16), which redefined the semantics of
these two comparison modes globally, which was a disaster and had to be
reverted at 78cc1a54 ("Revert "diff-lib.c: adjust position of i-t-a
entries in diff"", 2015-06-23).
To make sure we do not repeat the same mistake, introduce a new internal
diffopt option so that this different semantics can be asked for only by
callers that ask it, while making sure other unaudited callers will get
the same comparison result.

Call strbuf_add_unique_abbrev() to add abbreviated hashes to strbufs
instead of taking detours through find_unique_abbrev() and its static
buffer. This is shorter in most cases and a bit more efficient.
The changes here are not easily handled by a semantic patch because
they involve removing temporary variables and deconstructing format
strings for strbuf_addf().

Collect extra per-file data for porcelain V2 format.
The output of `git status --porcelain` leaves out many
details about the current status that clients might like
to have. This can force them to be less efficient as they
may need to launch secondary commands (and try to match
the logic within git) to accumulate this extra information.
For example, a GUI IDE might want the file mode to display
the correct icon for a changed item (without having to stat
it afterwards).

"git status" learned to suggest "merge --abort" during a conflicted
merge, just like it already suggests "rebase --abort" during a
conflicted rebase.

forbid operations on a branch that is checked out or being actively
worked on elsewhere, by noticing that e.g. it is being rebased.

case where "git commit" would have allowed you to commit, and this
improves it a little bit ("git commit --dry-run --short" still does
not give you the correct answer, for example). This is a stop-gap
measure in that "commit --short --dry-run" still gives an incorrect
result.

The 'commit --dry-run' and 'commit' return values differed if a
conflicted merge had been resolved and the resulting commit would
record the same tree as the parent.
Update show_merge_in_progress to set the commitable bit if conflicts
have been resolved and a merge is in progress.

The strbuf_getline() interface allows a byte other than LF or NUL as
the line terminator, but this is only because I wrote these
codepaths anticipating that there might be a value other than NUL
and LF that could be useful when I introduced line_termination long
time ago. No useful caller that uses other value has emerged.
By now, it is clear that the interface is overly broad without a
good reason. Many codepaths have hardcoded preference to read
either LF terminated or NUL terminated records from their input, and
then call strbuf_getline() with LF or NUL as the third parameter.
This step introduces two thin wrappers around strbuf_getline(),
namely, strbuf_getline_lf() and strbuf_getline_nul(), and
mechanically rewrites these call sites to call either one of
them. The changes contained in this patch are:
* introduction of these two functions in strbuf.[ch]
* mechanical conversion of all callers to strbuf_getline() with
either '\n' or '\0' as the third parameter to instead call the
respective thin wrapper.
After this step, output from "git grep 'strbuf_getline('" would
become a lot smaller. An interim goal of this series is to make
this an empty set, so that we can have strbuf_getline_crlf() take
over the shorter name strbuf_getline().

And if a branch is named "H", "HE", or "HEA" then the current if clause
erroneously considers it as matching "HEAD" because it only compares
up to the end of the branch name.
Fix that by doing the comparison using strcmp() and only after the
branch name is extracted. This way neither too less nor too many
characters are checked. While at it call strchrnul() to find the end
of the branch name instead of open-coding it.

If we're on a detached HEAD then wt_shortstatus_print_tracking() takes
the string "HEAD (no branch)", translates it, skips the first eleven
characters and passes the result to branch_get(), which returns a bogus
result and accesses memory out of bounds in order to produce it.
Somehow stat_tracking_info(), which is passed that result, does the
right thing anyway, i.e. it finds that there is no base.
Avoid the bogus results and memory accesses by checking for HEAD first
and exiting early in that case. This fixes t7060 with --valgrind.

One of the most common uses of git_path() is to pass a
constant, like git_path("MERGE_MSG"). This has two
drawbacks:
1. The return value is a static buffer, and the lifetime
is dependent on other calls to git_path, etc.
2. There's no compile-time checking of the pathname. This
is OK for a one-off (after all, we have to spell it
correctly at least once), but many of these constant
strings appear throughout the code.
This patch introduces a series of functions to "memoize"
these strings, which are essentially globals for the
lifetime of the program. We compute the value once, take
ownership of the buffer, and return the cached value for
subsequent calls. cache.h provides a helper macro for
defining these functions as one-liners, and defines a few
common ones for global use.
Using a macro is a little bit gross, but it does nicely
document the purpose of the functions. If we need to touch
them all later (e.g., because we learned how to change the
git_dir variable at runtime, and need to invalidate all of
the stored values), it will be much easier to have the
complete list.
Note that the shared-global functions have separate, manual
declarations. We could do something clever with the macros
(e.g., expand it to a declaration in some places, and a
declaration _and_ a definition in path.c). But there aren't
that many, and it's probably better to stay away from
too-magical macros.
Likewise, if we abandon the C preprocessor in favor of
generating these with a script, we could get much fancier.
E.g., normalizing "FOO/BAR-BAZ" into "git_path_foo_bar_baz".
But the small amount of saved typing is probably not worth
the resulting confusion to readers who want to grep for the
function's definition.

"git commit --cleanup=scissors" was not careful enough to protect
against getting fooled by a line that looked like scissors.

The diff and submodule shortlog appended to the commit message template
by 'git commit --verbose' are not stripped when the commit message
contains an indented scissors line.
When cleaning up a commit message with 'git commit --verbose' or
'--cleanup=scissors' the code is careful and triggers only on a pure
scissors line, i.e. a line containing nothing but a comment character, a
space, and the scissors cut. This is good, because people can embed
scissors lines in the commit message while using 'git commit --verbose',
and the text they write after their indented scissors line doesn't get
deleted.
While doing so, however, the cleanup function only looks at the first
line matching the scissors pattern and if it doesn't start at the
beginning of the line, then the function just returns without performing
any cleanup. This is wrong, because a "real" scissors line added by
'git commit --verbose' might follow, and in that case the diff and
submodule shortlog get included in the commit message.
Fix this by changing the scissors pattern to match only at the beginning
of the line, yet be careful to catch scissors on the first line as well.

After calling stat_tracking_info, callers often want to
print the name of the upstream branch (in addition to the
tracking count). To do this, they have to access
branch->merge->dst[0] themselves. This is not wrong, as the
return value from stat_tracking_info tells us whether we
have an upstream branch or not. But it is a bit leaky, as we
make an assumption about how it calculated the upstream
name.
Instead, let's add an out-parameter that lets the caller
know the upstream name we found.
As a bonus, we can get rid of the unusual tri-state return
from the function. We no longer need to use it to
differentiate between "no tracking config" and "tracking ref
does not exist" (since you can check the upstream_name for
that), so we can just use the usual 0/-1 convention for
success/error.

which returns a newly allocated memory the caller takes ownership

The run-command interface was easy to abuse and make a pipe for us
to read from the process, wait for the process to finish and then
attempt to read its output, which is a pattern that lead to a
deadlock. Fix such uses by introducing a helper to do this
correctly (i.e. we need to read first and then wait the process to
finish) and also add code to prevent such abuse in the run-command
helper.

When we spawn "git submodule status" to read its output, we
use run_command() followed by strbuf_read() read from the
pipe. This can deadlock if the subprocess output is larger
than the system pipe buffer.
Furthermore, if start_command() fails, we'll try to read
from a bogus descriptor (probably "-1" or a descriptor we
just closed, but it is a bad idea for us to make assumptions
about how start_command implements its error handling). And
if start_command succeeds, we leak the file descriptor for
the pipe to the child.
All of these can be solved by using the capture_command
helper.

We call strbuf_read(), and want to know whether we got any
output. To do so, we assign the result to a size_t, and
check whether it is non-zero.
But strbuf_read returns a signed ssize_t. If it encounters
an error, it will return -1, and we'll end up treating this
the same as if we had gotten output. Instead, we can just
check whether our buffer has anything in it (which is what
we care about anyway, and is the same thing since we know
the buffer was empty to begin with).
Note that the "len" variable actually has two roles in this
function. Now that we've eliminated the first, we can push the
declaration closer to the point of use for the second one.

This is a holdover from the original implementation in
ac8d5af (builtin-status: submodule summary support,
2008-04-12), which just had the sub-process output to our
descriptor; we had to make sure we had flushed any data that
we produced before it started writing.
Since 3ba7407 (submodule summary: ignore --for-status
option, 2013-09-06), however, we pipe the sub-process output
back to ourselves. So there's no longer any need to flush
(it does not hurt, but it may leave readers wondering why we
do it).

"git branch" on a detached HEAD always said "(detached from xyz)",
even when "git status" would report "detached at xyz". The HEAD is
actually at xyz and haven't been moved since it was detached in
such a case, but the user cannot read what the current value of
HEAD is when "detached from" is used.

wt_status_print() is the only caller of wt_status_get_detached_from().
The latter performs most of the analysis of a detached HEAD, including
finding state->detached_from; the caller checks whether the detached
HEAD is still at state->detached_from or has moved away.
Move that last bit of analysis to wt_status_get_detached_from(), too,
and store the boolean result in state->detached_at.

git commit and git status in long format show the diff between HEAD
and the index when given -v. This allows previewing a commit to be made.
They also list tracked files with unstaged changes, but without a diff.
Introduce '-v -v' which shows the diff between the index and the
worktree in addition to the HEAD index diff. This allows a review of unstaged
changes which might be missing from the commit.
In the case of '-v -v', additonal header lines

are inserted before the diffs, which are equal to those in the status
part; the latter preceded by 50*"-" to make it stick out more.

When we are chomping newlines from the end of a strbuf, we
must check "sb.len != 0" before accessing "sb.buf[sb.len - 1]".
However, this code mistakenly checks "&sb.len", which is
always true (it is a part of an auto struct, so the address
is always non-zero). This could lead to us accessing memory
outside the strbuf when we read an empty file.

Add managed "env" array to child_process to clarify the lifetime
rules.

resolve_ref_unsafe takes a boolean argument for reading (a nonexistent ref
resolves successfully for writing but not for reading). Change this to be
a flags field instead, and pass the new constant RESOLVE_REF_READING when
we want this behaviour.
While at it, swap two of the arguments in the function to put output
arguments at the end. As a nice side effect, this ensures that we can
catch callers that were unaware of the new API so they can be audited.
Give the wrapper functions resolve_refdup and read_ref_full the same
treatment for consistency.

Most struct child_process variables are cleared using memset first after
declaration. Provide a macro, CHILD_PROCESS_INIT, that can be used to
initialize them statically instead. That's shorter, doesn't require a
function call and is slightly more readable (especially given that we
already have STRBUF_INIT, ARGV_ARRAY_INIT etc.).

"git status" (and "git commit") behaved as if changes in a modified
submodule are not there if submodule.*.ignore configuration is set,
which was misleading. The configuration is only to unclutter diff
output during the course of development, and should not to hide
changes in the "status" output to cause the users forget to commit
them.

Currently setting submodule.<name>.ignore and/or diff.ignoreSubmodules to
"all" suppresses all output of submodule changes for the diff family,
status and commit. For status and commit this is really confusing, as it
even when the user chooses to record a new commit for an ignored submodule
by adding it manually this change won't show up under the to-be-committed
changes. To add insult to injury, a later "git commit" will error out with
"nothing to commit" when only ignored submodules are staged.
Fix that by making wt_status always print staged submodule changes, no
matter what ignore settings are configured. The only exception is when the
user explicitly uses the "--ignore-submodules=all" command line option, in
that case the submodule output is still suppressed. This also makes "git
commit" work again when only modifications of ignored submodules are
staged, as that command uses the "commitable" member of the wt_status
struct to determine if staged changes are present. But this only happens
when the commit command uses the wt_status* functions to produce status
output for human consumption (when forking an editor or with --dry-run),
in all other cases (e.g. when run in a script with '-m') another code path
is taken which uses index_differs_from() to determine if any changes are
staged which still ignores submodules according to their configuration.
This will be fixed in a follow-up commit.
Change t7508 to reflect this new behavior and add three new tests to show
that a single staged submodule configured to be ignored will be committed
when the status output is generated and won't be if not. Also update the
documentation of the ignore config options accordingly.

"git status --branch --porcelain" displays the status of the branch
(ahead, behind, gone), and used gettext to translate the string.
Use hardcoded strings when --porcelain is used, but keep the gettext
translation for "git status --short" which is essentially the same, but
meant to be read by a human.

When we show unmerged paths, we had an artificial 20 columns floor
for the width of labels (e.g. "both deleted:") shown next to the
pathnames. Depending on the locale, this may result in a label that
is too wide when all the label strings are way shorter than 20
columns, or no-op when a label string is longer than 20 columns.
Just drop the artificial floor. The screen real estate is better
utilized this way when all the strings are shorter.
Adjust the tests to this change.

The original code assumes that:
(1) the number of bytes written is the width of a string, so they
can line up;
(2) the "how" string is always <= 19 bytes.
Neither of which we should assume.
Using the same approach as the earlier 3651e45c (wt-status: take the
alignment burden off translators, 2013-11-05), compute the necessary
column width to hold the longest label and use that for alignment.

Earlier in 3651e45c (wt-status: take the alignment burden off
translators, 2013-11-05), we assumed that it is OK to make the
string before the colon in a label string we give as the section
header of various kinds of changes (e.g. "new file:") translatable.
This assumption apparently does not hold for some languages,
e.g. ones that want to have spaces around the colon.
Also introduce a static label_width to avoid having to run
strlen(padding) over and over.

Remove a few duplicate implementations of prefix/suffix comparison
functions, and rename them to starts_with and ends_with.

"git commit -v" appends the patch to the log message before
editing, and then removes the patch when the editor returned
control. However, the patch was not stripped correctly when the
first modified path was a submodule.

commit -v: strip diffs and submodule shortlogs from the commit message
When using the '-v' option of "git commit" the diff added to the commit
message temporarily for editing is stripped off after the user exited the
editor by searching for "\ndiff --git " and truncating the commmit message
there if it is found.
But this approach has two problems:
- when the commit message itself contains a line starting with
"diff --git" it will be truncated there prematurely; and
- when the "diff.submodule" setting is set to "log", the diff may
start with "Submodule <hash1>..<hash2>", which will be left in
the commit message while it shouldn't.
Fix that by introducing a special scissor separator line starting with the
comment character ('#' or the core.commentChar config if set) followed by
two lines describing what it is for. The scissor line - which will not be
translated - is used to reliably detect the start of the diff so it can be
chopped off from the commit message, no matter what the user enters there.
Turn a known test failure fixed by this change into a successful test;
also add one for a diff starting with a submodule log and another one for
proper handling of the comment char.

align, especially when there are no guarantees that these strings are

Historically, "git status" needed to prefix each output line with '#' so
that the output could be added as comment to the commit message. This
prefix comment has no real purpose when "git status" is ran from the
command-line, and this may distract users from the real content.
Disable this prefix comment by default, and make it re-activable for
users needing backward compatibility with status.displayCommentPrefix.
Obviously, "git commit" ignores status.displayCommentPrefix and keeps the
comment unconditionnaly when writing to COMMIT_EDITMSG (but not when
writing to stdout for an error message or with --dry-run).

The --for-status option was an undocumented option used only by
wt-status.c, which inserted a header and commented out the output. We can
achieve the same result within wt-status.c, without polluting the
submodule command-line options.
This will make it easier to disable the comments from wt-status.c later.
The --for-status is kept so that another topic in flight
(bc/submodule-status-ignored) can continue relying on it, although it is
currently a no-op.

In order to see what the current branch is tracking, one way is using
"git branch -v -v", but branches other than the current are also
reported. Another way is using "git status", such as:
$ git status
# On branch master
# Your branch is ahead of 'origin/master' by 1 commit.
...
But this will not work if there is no change between the current
branch and its upstream. Always report upstream tracking info
even if there is no difference, so that "git status" is consistent
for checking tracking info for current branch. E.g.
$ git status
# On branch feature1
# Your branch is up-to-date with 'github/feature1'.
...
$ git status -bs
## feature1...github/feature1
...
$ git checkout feature1
Already on 'feature1'
Your branch is up-to-date with 'github/feature1'.
...

Command "git branch -vv" will report tracking branches, but invalid
tracking branches are also reported. This is because the function
stat_tracking_info() can not distinguish invalid tracking branch
from other cases which it would not like to report, such as
there is no upstream settings at all, or nothing is changed between
one branch and its upstream.
Junio suggested missing upstream should be reported [1] like:
$ git branch -v -v
master e67ac84 initial

In order to do like that, we need to distinguish these three cases
(i.e. no tracking, with configured but no longer valid tracking, and
with tracking) in function stat_tracking_info(). So the refactored
function stat_tracking_info() has three return values: -1 (with "gone"
base), 0 (no base), and 1 (with base).
If the caller does not like to report tracking info when nothing
changed between the branch and its upstream, simply checks if
num_theirs and num_ours are both 0.

Invocations of "git checkout" used internally by "git rebase" were
counted as "checkout", and affected later "git checkout -" to the
the user to an unexpected place.

I attempted to make index_state->cache[] a "const struct cache_entry **"
to find out how existing entries in index are modified and where. The
question I have is what do we do if we really need to keep track of on-disk
changes in the index. The result is
- diff-lib.c: setting CE_UPTODATE
- name-hash.c: setting CE_HASHED
- preload-index.c, read-cache.c, unpack-trees.c and
builtin/update-index: obvious
- entry.c: write_entry() may refresh the checked out entry via
fill_stat_cache_info(). This causes "non-const struct cache_entry
*" in builtin/apply.c, builtin/checkout-index.c and
builtin/checkout.c
- builtin/ls-files.c: --with-tree changes stagemask and may set
CE_UPDATE
Of these, write_entry() and its call sites are probably most
interesting because it modifies on-disk info. But this is stat info
and can be retrieved via refresh, at least for porcelain
commands. Other just uses ce_flags for local purposes.
So, keeping track of "dirty" entries is just a matter of setting a
flag in index modification functions exposed by read-cache.c. Except
unpack-trees, the rest of the code base does not do anything funny
behind read-cache's back.
The actual patch is less valueable than the summary above. But if
anyone wants to re-identify the above sites. Applying this patch, then
this:

git am was previously modified to provide --continue for consistency
with rebase, merge etc, and the documentation changed to showing
--continue as the primary form.
Complete the work by replacing remaining uses of --resolved by
--continue, most notably in suggested command reminders.

quote_path_relative() used to take a counted string as its parameter
(the string to be quoted). With an earlier change, it now uses
relative_path() that does not take a counted string, and we have
been passing only the pointer to the string since then.
Remove the length parameter from quote_path_relative() to show that
this parameter was redundant. All the changed lines show that the
caller passed either -1 (to ask the function run strlen() on the
string), or the length of the string, so the earlier conversion was
safe.
All the callers of quote_path_relative() that used to take counted string
have been audited to make sure that they are passing length of the actual
string (or -1 to ask the callee run strlen())

The recent addition of status.branch started affecting what is shown
when "git status --porcelain" is run by mistake. Identify the
configuration items that should be ignored under "--porcelain"
option, introduce a "deferred config" mechanism to keep the values
read from the configuration, and decide what value to use only after
we read both from configuration and command line.

When cherry-pick is in progress, 'git status' gives the advice to
run "git commit" to finish the cherry-pick.
However, this won't continue the sequencer, when picking a range of
commits.
Advise users to run "git cherry-pick --continue/--abort"; they work
when picking a single commit as well.

b397ea4 (status: show more info than "currently not on any branch",
2013-03-13) attempted to make the output of 'git status' richer in
the case of a detached HEAD. Before this patch, with a detached
HEAD, we saw:
$ git status
# Not currently on any branch.
But after the patch, we see:
$ git checkout v1.8.2
$ git status
# HEAD detached at v1.8.2.
It works by digging the reflog for the most recent message of the
form "checkout: moving from xxxx to yyyy". It then asserts that
HEAD and "yyyy" are the same, and displays this message. When they
aren't equal, it displays:
$ git status
# HEAD detached from fe11db.
so that the user can see where the HEAD was first detached.
In case of a rebase [-i] operation in progress, this message depends
on the implementation of rebase writing "checkout: " messages to the
reflog, but that is an implementation detail of "rebase". To remove
this dependency so that rebase can be updated to write better reflog
messages, replace this "HEAD detached from" message with:
# rebase in progress; onto $ONTO
Changes to the commit object name in the expected output for some of
the tests shows that what the test expected "status" to show during
"rebase -i" was not consistent with the output during a vanilla
"rebase", which showed on top of what commit the series is being
replayed. Now we consistently expect something meaningful to the
end user.

The struct grab_1st_switch_cbdata has the field "found", which is
set in grab_1st_switch() when a match is found. This information is
redundant and unused by any code. The return value of the function
serves to communicate this information anyway.
Remove the field.

'git-status --ignored' still scans the work tree twice to collect
untracked and ignored files, respectively.
fill_directory / read_directory already supports collecting untracked and
ignored files in a single directory scan. However, the DIR_COLLECT_IGNORED
flag to enable this has some git-add specific side-effects (e.g. it
doesn't recurse into ignored directories, so listing ignored files with
--untracked=all doesn't work).
The DIR_SHOW_IGNORED flag doesn't list untracked files and returns ignored
files in dir_struct.entries[] (instead of dir_struct.ignored[] as
DIR_COLLECT_IGNORED). DIR_SHOW_IGNORED is used all throughout git.
We don't want to break the existing API, so lets introduce a new flag
DIR_SHOW_IGNORED_TOO that lists untracked as well as ignored files similar
to DIR_COLLECT_FILES, but will recurse into sub-directories based on the
other flags as DIR_SHOW_IGNORED does.
In dir.c::read_directory_recursive, add ignored files to either
dir_struct.entries[] or dir_struct.ignored[] based on the flags. Also move
the DIR_COLLECT_IGNORED case here so that filling result lists is in a
common place.
In wt-status.c::wt_status_collect_untracked, use the new flag and read
results from dir_struct.ignored[]. Remove the extra fill_directory call.
builtin/check-ignore.c doesn't call fill_directory, setting the git-add
specific DIR_COLLECT_IGNORED flag has no effect here. Remove for clarity.
Update API documentation to reflect the changes.
Performance: with this patch, 'git-status --ignored' is typically as fast
as 'git-status'.

'git-ls-files --ignored --directories' hides empty directories even though
--no-empty-directory was not specified.
Treat the DIR_HIDE_EMPTY_DIRECTORIES flag independently from
DIR_SHOW_IGNORED to make all git-ls-files options work as expected.

In wt_status_print_change_data, we accept a change_type flag
that is meant to be either WT_STATUS_UPDATED or
WT_STATUS_CHANGED. We then switch() on this value to set
the local variable "status" for each case, but do not
provide a fallback "default" label to the switch statement.
As a result, the compiler realizes that "status" might be
unset, and complains with a warning. To silence this
warning, we use the "int status = status" trick. This is
correct with the current code, as all callers provide one of
the two expected change_type flags. However, it's also a
maintenance trap, as there is nothing to prevent future
callers from passing another flag, nor to document this
assumption.
Instead of using the "x = x" hack, let's handle the default
case in the switch() statement with a die("BUG"). That tells
the compiler and any readers of the code exactly what the
function's input assumptions are.
We could also convert the flag to an enum, which would
provide a compile-time check on the function input. However,
since these flags are part of a larger enum, that would make
the code unnecessarily complex (we would have to make a new
enum with just the two flags, and then convert it to the old
enum for passing to sub-functions).

When a remote ref or a tag is checked out, HEAD is automatically
detached. There is no user-friendly way to find out what ref is
checked out in this case. This patch digs in reflog for this
information and shows "HEAD detached from origin/master" or "HEAD
detached at v1.8.0" instead of "currently not on any branch".
When it cannot figure out the original ref, it shows an abbreviated
SHA-1. "Currently not on any branch" would never display (unless
reflog is pruned to near empty that the last checkout entry is lost).

The strbufs are placed outside read_and_strip_branch as a premature
optimization: when it reads "refs/heads/foo" to strbuf and wants to
return just "foo", it could do so without memory movement. In return
the caller must not use the returned pointer after releasing strbufs,
which own the buffers that contain the returned strings. It's a clumsy
design.
By moving strbufs into read_and_strip_branch(), the returned pointer
always points to a malloc'd buffer or NULL. The pointer can be passed
around and freed after use.

The typical use-case is starting a rebase, do something else, come
back the day after, run "git status" or make a new commit and wonder
what in the world's going on. Which branch is being rebased is
probably the most useful tidbit to help, but the target may help
too.
Ideally, I would have loved to see "rebasing master on
origin/master", but the target ref name is not stored during rebase,
so this patch writes "rebasing master on a78c8c98b" as a
half-measure to remind future users of that potential improvement.

Allow a configuration variable core.commentchar to customize the
character used to comment out the hint lines in the edited text from
the default '#'.

Some users do want to write a line that begin with a pound sign, #,
in their commit log message. Many tracking system recognise
a token of #<bugid> form, for example.
The support we offer these use cases is not very friendly to the end
users. They have a choice between
- Don't do it. Avoid such a line by rewrapping or indenting; and
- Use --cleanup=whitespace but remove all the hint lines we add.
Give them a way to set a custom comment char, e.g.
$ git -c core.commentchar="%" commit
so that they do not have to do either of the two workarounds.

Output from "git status --ignored" showed an unexpected interaction
with "--untracked".

The current behavior of git-status is inconsistent and misleading.
Especially when used with --untracked-files=all option:
- files ignored in untracked directories will be missing from
status output.
- untracked files in committed yet ignored directories are also
missing.
- with --untracked-files=normal, untracked directories that
contains only ignored files are dropped too.
Make the behavior more consistent across all possible use cases:
- "--ignored --untracked-files=normal" doesn't show each specific
files but top directory. It instead shows untracked directories
that only contains ignored files, and ignored tracked directories
with untracked files.
- "--ignored --untracked-files=all" shows all ignored files, either
because it's in an ignored directory (tracked or untracked), or
because the file is explicitly ignored.
