TL;DR: Librem 5 was endorsed by FSF multiple times for it's dedication to Free Software and Free Hardware where the CEO of purism said to release the CAD files under GPLv3 compatible license once they recover the development cost, the cost should be recovered a long time ago, but the CAD files are still not released.

Purism started the development of Librem 5 in 2014 after a successful crowdsourcing campaign where it got 2 500 000 USD in 60 days[2] after which the CEO Todd Weaver said that the CAD files will be released once they recover the development cost:[1]

CEO Todd Weaver says that Purism needs to recover its development costs before releasing the Gerber files, which they are “thinking about releasing in a time capsule” of “3 years, 5 years, something like that.” [1]

I believe that the development cost is already paid, but purism didn't release the CAD files.

To calculate the development cost:

Variables

The amount of fabricated devices per batch are not public[7] so working with 1000 davices per batch which seems to be the most common.

PCB

The PCB is 10 layers[3] with "mixed signals increasing the fabrication cost"[4]

PCBWay quote: Manufacturing of 1000 main board PCBs is 3409.91 USD (34.0991 USD per board) assuming:

  • assumed dimensions of 50x80mm (most likely bigger then the used PCB)
  • 12 layers (calculated for 12 layers, the 10 layers was clarified later)
  • FR-4 as base material of thickness 1.6mm
  • 6/6mil spacing
  • 0.3mm min hole size
  • Blue solder mask
  • White silkscreen
  • No Edge connector
  • HASL lead free surface finish
  • Tenting vias
  • 1 oz Cu finishing
  • 1 oz Inner copper

chasis

The chasis is injection molded in what seems to be a nylon with most likely additives to be UV stabilized and 15% Glass filled [2].

The 3D files are not provided so using this librem 5 case from thingiverse which should be close to the actual dimensions https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4961260

Converted from STL to IGES using FreeCAD.

PCBWay quote: Waiting..

Battery

The battery (BPP-L503[5]) is manufactured by Westrock [https://www.westrock.ca] with custom purism branding

Price: ...

Modem

The modem is modular and not manufactured by purism that sells it as saparate from the phone thus not included in the calculation.
