Context: I am reworking the design of VoronDesign's Voron 2.4 to be more:

  • Functional
  • Technoliberal (converting from Fusion360 to FreeCAD+OpenSCAD/LibFive)
  • Economical
  • Mass-producible

Currently the CoreXY design is using a 2020 v-slot rail extrusions for the frame:

With linear rails attached on the inside:

Where the alluminium extrusions are:

  1. significantly less economical compared to 3D printed rPLA or plastic molded parts (+- 8x more expensive in comparison)
  2. Too high of a safety factor compared to custom design in rPLA (over-engineered)
  3. Difficult to change e.g. shortning and extending and changing the shape

Issues with rPLA parts:

  1. the failure mode in case of a high temperature is melting and then burning, but this can be workarounded through using additives

First prototype designed to be integrated in 2020 alluminium extrusion-like geometry failed as the "pegs" used to click into the indexing slots to enable the expansion is not well optimized for additive manufacturing as it's causes print failures that interfiere with the function
